    http://pitchfork.com/news/57846-the-national-sufjan-stevens-perfume-genius-arcade-fires-will-butler-to-play-musicnow-festival/

this year’s lineup for the collaborative festival includes the National performing with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Dessner/Sufjan Stevens/Nico Muhly collaborative work Planetarium, Perfume Genius, Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, and more.

So, who else is going? The second I heard about this I snagged 2nd row center tickets for the National show and managed to get 3rd row center for Sufjan the following night. They really knocked it out of the park with the lineup this year, I mean damn seeing the National perform with an orchestra is going to be breathtaking.

I will be there. I also got 2nd row tickets, but the seating chart on the site was slightly confusing so I’m not 100% sure. Should be an awesome show regardless.

I bought a ticket yesterday just after Bryce posted the announcement on his Facebook page. I bought a single 3rd Row Seat in the ORCH 2 section. It was $65. Today went to the ticket page and it says “Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra with The National (25 minute set)”. I bought that ticket with the understanding that The National will be playing a full show like they did in 2011 when I saw them. Now it says on the website that it is only 25 minutes?? Please tell me I didn’t buy a $65 ticket to a show I have to drive 2 hours to get to for a 25 minute set. Ughhhh…..

I am in the same boat. When I purchased my ticket, I was under the impression that it would be a full show. I don’t buy the 25 minute set–there’s no way they would charge that much for that.

I’m with you both. It’s disappointing that none of the announcements for the event mentions that crucial little detail, and on Twitter MusicNow really seems to be dancing around the subject while basically confirming our fears.

I just hope the Sufjan set is actually a full performance of Planetarium, because then I can at least justify making a weekend out of the trip to Cincinnati. They did mention on Twitter that there would be some surprises, so hopefully they managed to at least get The National to play for a while longer, perhaps without the orchestra accompaniment.

Agreed with the false advertising. Thought it was my dream performance. Anyone want to refund me $800 for flights?

Has anyone tried contacting MusicNow about this? I tried on Twitter and got a pretty pathetic reply and sent them a much longer statement through Facebook and haven’t gotten a reply. I haven’t seen a phone number or email address for the festival, but I suppose it might be worth contacting the venue.

    Ouch, that’s rough.

Well, they got back to me via Facebook and here’s what they had to say regarding the 25 minute set:

Yes, The National are playing with the symphony, which precludes them from playing a traditional show. There are so many great performers this year, and so much of Bryce’s music will be performed.

So basically it was a bait and switch it seems to me. If it always was going to be just a 25 minute show then they should have said so in the first place. Money is kind of tight for me so $65 and a tank of gas, parking and 4 hours round trip drive is steep. I paid only $35 to see The National in Louisville, KY in Sept of last year and that was a full show. Hard to believe they are going to travel to Cincinnati just to play a 25 minute show with the symphony. I know their families live there in town (I met them during the Cincinnati Film Festival at the Mistaken for Strangers showing) but still. This is very disappointing. I wonder how many others bought tickets expecting a full show from The National? I guess I will hold on to my ticket for a few months until it gets closer to the show. If nothing changes, then maybe I will try and sell it on Stubhub.

I’m just hoping for an after show type situation now, perhaps at the Emery, where they played in 2012. I may try bugging MusicNow to see if that’s a possibility, but it may be worth contacting the National’s management too, I don’t know.

Let us know if you guys/gals find anything out. I think we are all in the same situation. I definitely expect more clarity as the date gets closer, but I’m still disappointed that we appear to have been duped.

Also during the MusicNOW Festival from March 11th–20th at the Contemporary Arts Center · 404 E. 6th St, Cincinnati, OH there will be the ongoing video installation “A Lot of Sorrow — by Ragnar Kjartansson featuring The National”.

“The six-hour video A Lot of Sorrow was filmed during a performance of the same name that was conceived by Kjartansson and executed by The National. For this event, part of MoMA PS1’s Sunday Sessions in May 2013, The National played their three-minute, twenty-five second song “Sorrow” live on stage, repeatedly and continuously, for six hours.”

Here are images from the installation as well as an explanation of what it is…

I just got an email today from the MusicNOW Festival with the festival lineup. Now they are saying that the set with The National is only 20 minutes. Here is the email I just received…

So basically at first they didn’t mention anything about how long The National would perform and when I bought my ticket it was with the assumption that it would be a full show as they did their at the MusicNOW festival in 2011. Then they update the program to say it is just a 25 minute set with the Cinci Orchestra. Now it is only a 20 minute set. Great.

As disappointing as this is, I highly doubt The National will let us down. I’m sure they’re aware that many people bought tix solely on the presumption that TN would be playing a full show.

While we may not get that full set, maybe we’ll get some other surprises or something. I’m just hoping for the best.

Scott and Bryan’s band Lanzendorf is playing on Saturday during intermission and Bryce is doing a solo piece on Friday, so I’m not sure how much more we’ll get. Honestly, if there was going to be a real National set I think they would’ve announced it by now to boost sales. I sincerely hope I’m wrong though.
