    So Far Around the Bend

Sadly this song gets completely overlooked. It is one of the finest in their catalogue, top ten for sure.

Literally signed up just to say “Theory of the Crows”. It’s one of my favorites, lyrically and musically–yet I’ve never seen anybody else talk about it. Not even fans. Never. Anywhere. Is it just me?

It’s not just you. I particularly love that he never says what his theory of the crows actually *IS*.

How do you guys decide what is underrated? Just curious. Is it based on what this board likes or do you, unlike me, have a good pool of people with opinions on the national?

The whole story of the song…the bitterness and that whole part about sucking people off…it was so bitter and heavy, and it made me view The National completely differently. After “Crows”, I stopped thinking of them as so much sad as sarcastic in a lot of ways… and I love that drawing. It’s my wallpaper now.

I’ve got a small pool of friends who like The National, but a lot of them are only into HV, or a few songs from each album. So I at least have a good idea of what’s “popular” (Bloodbuzz, About Today, Geese…surprisingly not Fake Empire). And then just based on reviews and posts I’ve seen various places.

Ever since I stumbled upon “Keep it upstairs” on the single for “Abel”(?) i’ve been in love with the concept of the song which was later made into perfection by “Blank slate”. I love bees.

“Pay for me” is another favourite that I don’t hear so much about.

Little Faith, Fashion Coat, and Hard To Find.
LF especially, because for whatever reason everyone hates that song.

“Ada,” “Wasp Nest,” “Ashamed of the Story I Told” and “American Mary.” All some of my favorites, with some degree of underrated-ness (I think so, anyway).

The Thrilling of Claire, Driver, Surprise Me or Santa Clara. Jesus I really think Val Jester is underrated as well though.

Ada and Slipped are their most underrated songs.
