Patterns of Fairytales has been mentioned enough times in this thread that I’m not sure I can suggest it and claim it’s still underrated, but also I’ve got a soft spot for Driver, Surprise Me and It Never Happened.
Seeing you guys put some songs in your lists of their top 10 best songs made me recheck these songs: Tall Saint, Blank Slate and Driver, Surprise Me. I realized that at first I really didn’t give them a chance and they were underrated by me. So, it depends how many people don’t give them a credit they deserve. The band probably don’t. Because, I really think they should play these live. Again, I’m not sure how underrated by fans those songs are.
Next, I agree with one of previous comments, Guest Room is pretty underrated. Also, Apartment Story deserves more attention. Let’s put City Middle and Santa Clara into this group.
Gonna throw out some old school suggestions at a later point but for now I’m just going to throw in Don’t Swallow the Cap – I know people on here were more pleased with it than Demons but it was still a slightly luekwarm responce – I think it is a really, really great track. The double tracking of matt’s vocals an octave below is a joy. Something about the flow of the vocals, and then that weird sort of radio-am drum machine toward the end.. it’s brilliant!
This changes on a daily basis… but today I am going with “So Far Around the Bend.” For me, it tends to get overlooked since it wasn’t released as part of an album or EP, and consequently, doesn’t get listened to as much as it should.
I have to say I liked “A Reasonable Man” before I even knew anything about The National. I just happened upon it one day. Shame on me, I guess. I had no idea what I was in for when I discovered them for real.
