I’m sure there are at least a few Sufjan fans on here. His new album, Carrie and Lowell, is out on the 31st, but leaked over the weekend.

    If anyone’s heard it, thoughts?

Emotionally, it’s heart breaking. Some of the lyrics are downright painful. Yet it can be strangely uplifting, not unlike The National’s music. Sonically, I love how ethereal and other worldly it sounds. The droney, distant keys underpinning a lot of the songs add a really ghostly, eerie quality to the songs.

I’ve never been too keen on Sufjan, but I’ve listened to the two singles he’s released from this and like them both. I’ll be picking it up on the 31st. I’ve heard it’s about the passing of his mother, so I can imagine just how heavy it is lyrically.

Check out the interview Pitchfork did with Sufjan, where he opens up about his relationship with his mother. Definitely worth the read if you have the time..

Saw him last night in Toronto, great show. And he had The National Initials t-shirt on!

I too have never been able to quite enjoy Sufjan’s music, but this latest album for some reason has worked its way into my brain. Really powerful stuff.
