Most would list the last five National albums as their best five albums (Alligator, Boxer, High Violet, Trouble Will Find Me, and Sleep Well Beast).

It’s really difficult to rank them but how would you rank the “big five” National albums?

Here is my ranking as of this morning …

    1. Boxer
    2. High Violet
    3. Sleep Well Beast
    4. Trouble Will Find Me
    5. Alligator

I know I’m in the minority, but I’ve never really enjoyed “High Violet”. I think it’s too early for me to know where “Sleep Well” fits in, but since I haven’t fully soaked it in yet I’ll place it near the bottom.

Also, I’m breaking the rules and adding “Sad Songs”.

    1. Boxer
    2. Alligator
    3. Trouble Will Find Me
    4. Sleep Well Beast
(4a.) – Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers
    5. High Violet

Agreed, ‘Sleep Well’ is going to take a while to process through the mental digestion tract, at the moment it’s sitting somewhere uncomfortably in the throat for me*

    So for now…

    1. Boxer
    2. High Violet
    3. Alligator
    4. Trouble Will Find Me
    5. Sleep Well Beast
(5a.) – take all the good stuff off Sad Songs and self-titled and hash it into one good album

    * this metaphor seemed like a good idea when I started typing

    1. High Violet. And if we take the expanded version, it’s no competition.
    2. Trouble Will Find Me
    3. Sleep Well Beast
    4. Boxer
    5. Secret Garden

it’s astonishing to me that anyone can put alligator lower than 2, just my opinion. I’ve seen them 25-30 times, followed them on tour for 10, 11 years and I am somewhat disappointed in the new album. Nobody else will be there, the system and day i die are all great but there’s not another track i’d put in their top 50.

    anyway, for me:
    boxer
    alligator
    high violet
    TWFM
    sleep well beast

I would consider High Violet as their worst album. Not to say I don’t like High Violet, but I’m not sure why their first two wouldn’t be included in this ranking game…

I absolutely and entirely agree with every word my “virtual” pal Jimbo has written here.
High Violet was the group’s attempt to woo a larger audience. It served their purpose but was a major disappointment to many – as the reaction on this forum back in 2010 will testify.
I agree that both “The National” and “Sad Songs For Dirty Bastards” should figure in any ranking list.

I don’t get why there’re so many haters of High Violet. For me it`s very nice album, only Boxer sounds better than it.
    Here is my ranking:
    1. Boxer
1a. Virginia EP (the greatest EP ever which I can even rank higher than some of their albums)
    2. High Violet
    3. Alligator
    4. TWFM
    5. Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers/The National (definitely both of them should be in top 5)

Sleep Well Beast almost entirely passed over me, except of two or three songs.

TWFM and Sleep Well Beast are interchangeable in terms of order, but Sleep Well Beast keeps growing on me. When I was young, I bought The Smiths’ Louder Than Bombs and gave it a good listen. At first, I was turned off by the jangly guitar work of Johnny Marr; the sound was nothing like I had ever heard before. I listened to it over and over until I was mesmerized and then spent the next years as a rabid Smiths fan. It’s the same thing with Sleep Well Beast. The more I listen to it, the more I can’t turn it off.

I’m starting to feel the same way, and I think SWB has climbed up to 3 or 4 in my list.
