Bye Lou 🙁 🙁 🙁October 28, 2013 at 8:36 pm #12120
So maybe a bit flippant earlier. However, the following was sent me by someone who knows the regard I held for the old fella.
A tribute from Joseph Arthur about his friend Lou Reed –October 29, 2013 at 11:13 pm #12138
I am sad about this. Really quite sad.October 30, 2013 at 5:22 pm #12147
Yeah, it hit me very hard. I wasn’t expecting that to happen. It’s led me back to some of the music I loved but hadn’t played in ages because I’ve heard it so much. Soundtrack to big sections of my life.November 3, 2013 at 6:28 pm #12186
Favourite songs? Mine are Oh! Sweet Nuthin’, Romeo had Juliet, Caroline Says and all the hits. Relieved to only have heard stuff he did which I liked (including thumping Bowie). So I’m reticent to try and hear new things but what are your suggestions Rosemary?November 8, 2013 at 9:01 pm #12311
I am probably not the ideal person to ask. I had all Lou’s albums on vinyl back in the 80s and then I moved across the country several times. I loved his music so much in my early 20s that I listened to it to the point of saturation and beyond, so there haven’t been many occasions where I’ve felt the need to re-own most of it. I have Street Hassle, the live Velvets reunion thing, VU and Nico, Songs for Drella, Rock’n’Roll Heart and a couple of others. Gus and I saw Lou live when we were together the first time – 1986, I think – interestingly, at the same venue where I just saw TN this summer.
Oh yeah, and Lulu. Because.
https://twitter.com/WesleyStace/status/395577523448184832 Most disappointing correction ever.
Oh yeah, and favorite songs…god, so many. Street Hassle all time favorite. Heroin. All Tomorrow’s Parties. I’ll Be Your Mirror (the live version where Lou sings). Banging on My Drum. Disco Mystic. (I have a strong love for the charmingly stupid songs). Caroline Says II. Most of Songs for Drella.
The only recording of his that I’ve heard since Magic and Loss is Lulu, so I’ve missed a fair bit in there.November 8, 2013 at 9:54 pm #12314
Rosemary, how could you not mention Pale Blue Eyes and Sweet Jane ????
AHM > Get a hold of the compilation “NYC Man” – a best of Lou Reed (solo) and with the Velvets there really isn’t a bad track on it (although can’t say I was ever overly fond of Walk On The Wild Side). It opens with “Who Am I” and I expect you to associate with the lyrics of that song.November 8, 2013 at 10:49 pm #12316

Overkill, and I never really liked Sweet Jane to begin with. I mainly only like the Velvets stuff from when John Cale was in the band, apart from “Beginning to See the Light.”
